Location
Pierson Township
is a marvelous rural community situated on the
western edge of Montcalm County in the Panhandle
Area. Pierson Township offers a pleasant rural
country lifestyle which is enjoyed by the
township residents. The 131 expressway traverses
the Township from the southern border to the northern
border, allowing for a quick commute to
the bustling urban amenities offered by the metropolitan
Grand Rapids area just 30 minutes to the
south and Big Rapids just 30 minutes to the north.
Land Uses
Pierson Township
boasts a pleasant grouping of lakes and rural
residential areas on the western side of
the township. There is a larger concentration
of farm acreage to the east of US 131 expressway.
History
Pierson Township
is the eleventh township formed in Montcalm County.
It was officially organized on Feb. 17,
1857. It was named after the famly name of Pierson;
which had several members as settlers in
the township.
Growth
Pierson Township
is one of the fastest growing areas in Montcalm
County. The 1990 census listed the population
as 2177. In the 2000 census it had dramatically
increased to 2866. A little over 19% of
the housing units are seasonal as compared to
31% in 1990. Many of our residents find
it an asset to be able to live in Pierson Township
and commute the short distance to the Grand Rapids
and Big Rapids areas to work, shop and pursue
recreational activities.
